J-beauty decoded: how to read a Japanese skincare label

Japanese skincare uses different words, different textures and a different philosophy from Korean. The vocabulary, the drugstore icons, and why "lotion" does not mean lotion.

K-beauty and J-beauty are not the same thing

Korean skincare is fast, layered and ingredient-led: new heroes every season, percentages on the front, ten products competing for the same step. Japanese skincare is slower and quieter: fewer steps, hydration first, formulas that stay unchanged for a decade because they work. Hada Labo's Gokujyun lotion has been the best-selling skincare product in Japan for most of twenty years.

The practical difference for a shopper is vocabulary. Japanese labels are in kanji and katakana, and several of the English words on the front mean something other than what you expect.

The product types

On the boxSay itIt means
化粧水keshōsui"lotion" on the English side of the box, but it is a watery toner. The core of a Japanese routine, applied generously, often with hands or a cotton pad.
乳液nyūekiemulsion, "milk". A light moisturizer that comes after lotion. Japan's answer to the cream step.
美容液biyōekiserum or essence. The treatment step.
クリームkurīmucream. Used at night or in winter, on top of emulsion.
洗顔senganface wash. 洗顔フォーム is foam cleanser.
クレンジングkurenjingucleansing (oil, balm or water) for makeup removal.
日焼け止めhiyakedomesunscreen.
オールインワンōru-in-wanall-in-one: a gel that replaces lotion, serum and cream. Very Japanese.
パックpakkumask. シートマスク is a sheet mask.

The drugstore icons

Japanese beauty is famous for products that cost under $20 at a pharmacy and outperform department-store lines. These are the ones to know.

  • Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion: the hyaluronic acid toner. Slightly viscous, fragrance-free, layered two or three times.
  • Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Milk: Shiseido's sport sunscreen; the more you sweat, the stronger the film.
  • Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence: the everyday sunscreen with a gel-water feel and no white cast.
  • Senka Perfect Whip: the foam cleanser with the dense, marshmallow lather. Slightly alkaline, so follow with a hydrating lotion.
  • Melano CC Vitamin C Essence: stable vitamin C for dark spots, at drugstore prices.
  • Curél Intensive Moisture Cream: the ceramide cream for eczema-prone and sensitive skin.
  • Canmake Cream Cheek: the blush that made Japanese makeup a category.

A Japanese routine

Cleanse, lotion (化粧水), serum if you use one, emulsion (乳液), sunscreen in the morning. The lotion step is the heart of it: Japanese users apply more toner than Western or even Korean routines do, sometimes in three layers, a technique called 重ね付け (kasanezuke). The emulsion then seals it. On dry nights a cream goes over the emulsion rather than replacing it.

All of the Japanese products on Dew Select are grouped on the Japanese beauty page, with the label decoded on each.
