Your first Korean skincare routine: five steps, not ten

The ten-step routine was a marketing story. Here is the one people in Seoul actually do, which products go where, and what to add only when you want to.

The shape of a routine

Morning: cleanse, toner, one treatment, moisturizer, sunscreen. Night: double cleanse, toner, one treatment, moisturizer. Five things, and on a lazy night three. Everything else in Korean skincare (essences, pads, masks, ampoules, sleeping packs) is an option you add for a reason, not a step you owe.

The Korean idea that does matter is layering thin: several light, watery layers instead of one heavy cream, applied while the skin is still slightly damp. It is why toners are hydrating rather than stripping and why moisturizers come in gel, lotion and cream weights.

Step 1: cleanse (and double cleanse at night)

In the morning, water or a gentle low-pH gel cleanser is enough. At night, if you wore sunscreen or makeup, start with an oil or balm cleanser to dissolve them, then follow with a water-based cleanser. Oil first, foam second; massage the oil onto dry skin for a minute, add water to turn it milky, rinse.

Look for 약산성 (mildly acidic) on foam cleansers: pH 5 to 6 respects the skin barrier. COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is the standard recommendation for a reason.

Step 2: toner

A Korean toner is a hydrating first layer, not an alcohol astringent. Pat it in with your hands. Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Toner and Anua Heartleaf 77% are the two most bought in the world; Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented is the pick for fragrance-sensitive skin.

If you want to exfoliate, this is also where an acid toner or a toner pad goes, two or three nights a week rather than daily.

Step 3: one treatment

Pick a serum, essence or ampoule for the one thing you most want to change. Dehydration: hyaluronic acid (Torriden Dive-In). Dullness or dark spots: niacinamide or vitamin C (Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum, Goodal Green Tangerine). Redness: centella or azelaic acid (Skin1004, Anua Azelaic). Texture and pores: a BHA (COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid). Fine lines: retinol at night (COSRX The Retinol 0.1).

One treatment. Add a second only after a month with the first, so you know what is doing what.

Step 4: moisturize

Choose by weight. Gel or gel-cream for oily and combination skin (Torriden Dive-In Soothing Cream, Belif Aqua Bomb), lotion for normal (COSRX Oil-Free Lotion), cream for dry or barrier-damaged skin (Illiyoon Ceramide Ato, Aestura Atobarrier 365). Korean moisturizers are lighter than Western ones at the same price; if a cream feels heavy, the lotion of the same line is usually the answer.

Step 5: sunscreen, every morning

This is the step that does more than the other four combined. Two finger-lengths for the face, after moisturizer, before makeup. Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun if you like a dewy cream, Isntree Watery Sun Gel if you want it invisible, Skin1004 Sun Serum if you hate the feel of sunscreen altogether. See the sunscreen guide for SPF and PA.

The optional steps, and when they earn a place

  • Essence between toner and serum, when skin is dehydrated and you want another hydrating layer. COSRX Snail 96 is the classic.
  • Toner pads instead of toner on nights you want light exfoliation or a quick five-minute mask.
  • Sheet mask once or twice a week as a treat, not a treatment. Biodance Bio-Collagen is the current cult pick.
  • Sleeping mask as the last night step in winter (Laneige Water Sleeping Mask).
  • Eye cream if you have a specific concern; a good moisturizer does the rest.

Ordering rule of thumb

Thinnest to thickest, water before oil, sunscreen last in the morning. If two products are the same texture, the one you care more about goes first. Give any new active two weeks before judging it, and introduce one new product at a time so a reaction has an obvious cause.
