What the scan notices

The reading describes the surface of the skin in the photo: how hydrated it looks, where it is shiny, where it is red, how even the tone is, whether pores and texture are visible, and an appearance age that is the model's estimate of how old the skin looks, not how old you are. It says the same things a good shop assistant would say looking at you in daylight, and it says them in plain words.

Then it does the part a shop assistant cannot: it matches those observations to products by ingredient, skin type and price, and puts them in the order you use them.

What it cannot tell you

• It is not a diagnosis. It cannot tell acne from rosacea from dermatitis, and it does not try. If something on your skin is new, painful, spreading or worrying you, that is a dermatologist's job.
• It sees one photo in one light. Bathroom lighting reads warmer and redder than daylight; a ring light flattens texture. Take it in daylight, no filter, for the reading to mean anything.
• It cannot see under makeup or sunscreen. Bare skin, or the reading is of the product.
• It does not know what you are already using or allergic to. Read the "skip if" line on each product before buying.

What happens to the photo

• The photo is sent once, over an encrypted connection, to our server, where an AI model (Anthropic's, under a policy that does not keep inputs for training) writes the description.
• The photo is then discarded. We do not store it. Not on our server, not in analytics, not for training.
• The written reading (scores and the words describing your skin) is kept on your phone and, under a random account id with no name or email, on our server, so the app can build your routine. Delete the account in Settings and it is gone.
• Nothing about the reading is sent to Google Analytics or to retailers. The full policy is at /privacy.
