Toner pads: what they are and how to use them

The Korean product that does not exist in Western skincare. Hydrating pads, exfoliating pads, the five-minute mask trick, and which ones are worth it.

What a toner pad is

A tub of thin cotton or rayon rounds pre-soaked in toner. Korea invented the format so a toner could be applied evenly, then left on the skin as a mini mask. There are two families that look identical and do opposite things, so read the tub.

Soothing or hydrating pads (진정 패드, 수분 패드) are soaked in a calming toner: heartleaf, centella, mugwort. They are for every day and for red, reactive skin. Exfoliating pads (각질 패드, 필링 패드) carry AHA, BHA or PHA acids and are for texture, pores and breakouts, two or three times a week. Medicube Zero Pore Pad and COSRX One Step pads are exfoliating; Abib Heartleaf Spot Pad and Anua pads are soothing.

How to use one

  • After cleansing, on dry skin, wipe the textured side gently outward from the center of the face. That is the toner step done.
  • Turn the pad over and press the smooth side onto any area that needs more (cheeks for hydration, nose for pores).
  • The mask trick: lay two or three pads flat on the cheeks and forehead for five minutes, then remove and continue with serum. This is how Koreans use them on the way out the door.
  • Do not rinse. Do not use exfoliating pads on the same night as retinol or a vitamin C serum.

Picking one

Oily skin, visible pores, blackheads: Medicube Zero Pore Pad 2.0 (PHA and BHA) or COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid on a cotton pad, which does the same job for less. Sensitive, red or acne-prone skin: Abib Heartleaf Spot Pad, used daily. Dull, rough texture: an AHA pad or Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA Miracle Toner. Normal skin that just wants the convenience: any soothing pad.

One tub is 60 to 100 pads, so a soothing pad used daily lasts two to three months, and an exfoliating one used twice a week most of a year. Prices across retailers are on each product page.
